Anduril and Palantir capture more AI citations than five largest U.S. defense primes combined, study finds

Anduril and Palantir together captured 35% of AI citations across five major platforms, outpacing Lockheed, Northrop, RTX, Boeing, and General Dynamics combined at 21%. The two startups run on roughly $3.5B in revenue against the primes' $247B.

Two Defense Startups Out-Cited the Five Largest U.S. Defense Contractors Combined in AI Systems

Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies captured 35.0% of citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews in a new benchmark of defense and aerospace companies. The five largest legacy defense primes - Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX, Boeing, and General Dynamics - together accounted for 21.1%.

The finding comes from the Defense & Aerospace AI Visibility Index 2026, released by 5W, a PR firm focused on AI visibility. Researchers tested 28,400 prompts across five major AI systems to measure how often companies were named, cited, and recommended.

The revenue gap makes the citation pattern striking. Anduril and Palantir operate at roughly $3.5 billion combined annual revenue. The five legacy primes operate at approximately $247 billion. In this dataset, revenue did not predict citation share - the relationship trended negative.

How the Data Breaks Down

Anduril registered 19.8% citation share. Palantir registered 15.2%. SpaceX appeared in 12.7% of responses across defense, space, and adjacent technology categories.

The benchmark also measured which sources AI systems actually cite. Defense trade press - Defense News, Breaking Defense, The War Zone, War on the Rocks, and Defense One - accounted for 36.9% of all cited sources. Wikipedia anchored the dataset at 20.7%. Mainstream financial press (Reuters, Bloomberg, NYT, WSJ, FT combined) accounted for 12.7%.

Substack-hosted war journalism accounted for 4.4% of citations, larger than Defense One coverage and roughly equal to Bloomberg defense coverage.

What Correlated With Higher Citation Share

Founder-generated content showed a strong correlation with citation share. Palmer Luckey (Anduril), Alex Karp (Palantir), Elon Musk (SpaceX), and Brandon Tseng (Shield AI) were associated with the highest individual founder citation density during the testing window. No legacy prime exhibited comparable founder content output.

Reputational events persisted in AI retrieval. References to the Boeing 737 MAX episode appeared in 31% of Boeing Defense responses. F-35 cost overrun references appeared in 28% of Lockheed Martin responses. Palantir contractor and contract-related discussions appeared in 19% of Palantir responses - stable across both testing waves.

Topic-specific prompts about autonomous weapons and military AI drove Anduril's citation share to 28.1% and Shield AI's to 11.4%.

What This Means for Defense Communications

The index tested 25 companies across seven query categories including procurement, autonomous systems, AI-in-warfare ethics, and earth observation. Wave 1 ran January 15 - February 12, 2026. Wave 2 ran April 8 - May 6, 2026. Only findings stable across both waves within ±1.5 percentage-point tolerance were published.

"In a category where revenue has historically been the measure of weight, the AI systems we tested are surfacing a different pattern," said Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W. "The structural shift is hard to ignore."

The defense and aerospace earned-media playbook differs markedly from financial services. In financial sectors, mainstream financial press dominates AI citations. In defense, trade press accounts for more than one-third of all sources cited. PR professionals working with defense clients should adjust media strategy accordingly.

Citation Share - the metric used in the Index - measures the proportion of AI responses in which a company is mentioned, recommended, or cited. It is a proxy for model surface frequency, not for market share, contract activity, or operational performance.

For PR and communications professionals: Understanding how ChatGPT and similar systems cite sources is now essential to earned-media strategy. The AI for PR & Communications field has shifted from traditional press placement to optimizing for AI retrieval patterns.
