Anthropic CEO pushes back on 'doom marketing' accusations from Nvidia's Huang
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, rejected claims that his warnings about AI's economic impact are marketing tactics designed to build influence. The criticism comes from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who called predictions of mass job displacement "ridiculous" and accused AI leaders of a "God complex."
Amodei has publicly warned that AI could deliver 5-10 percent annual GDP growth while causing 10-20 percent unemployment and displacing roughly half of entry-level white-collar jobs in coding, finance, and law. He also cautioned that unchecked AI development could create "hypergrowth, hyper-inequality" and lasting job displacement.
In a Bloomberg interview, Amodei said his analysis goes deeper than social media clips suggest. "In every interview, I talk about the possible ways to address these risks from tax and microeconomic policy to what the new jobs are," he said. "In the Adolescence of Technology, I have five pages where I lay out differences between tasks and jobs."
Huang countered that AI leaders conflate jobs with tasks, damaging the industry's ability to recruit talent. He characterized their warnings as fear-mongering that overstates AI's apocalyptic dangers.
Amodei clarified his position: "No doom is coming, but this is something we should see coming and we are worried about it." He maintained his original level of concern about AI's economic effects.
The dispute reflects a broader tension in the tech industry. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 to the public this week while simultaneously calling for a freeze on AI development due to "self-improvement" concerns-positioning the company as both a developer and a cautious voice on safety.
