Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Defends Judicial Independence Amid Criticism

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has responded firmly to critics questioning the independence of Malaysia’s judiciary under the MADANI administration. Speaking at the launch of the 50-year art biography of renowned cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwarul Haque, or Zunar, Anwar emphasized that such criticisms overlook the nation’s historical context.

“Some people who once supported past abuses and injustice now suddenly speak about freedom,” Anwar said. He highlighted that his government remains dedicated to keeping the judiciary free from political influence, a pillar he considers essential for a just nation.

Judiciary as a Pillar of Justice

Anwar insisted that the judiciary must be protected from political meddling, which only leads to unfair treatment of the innocent. Drawing from past experiences, he stressed the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating mistakes.

“Our experience must make us wiser. The judiciary should always stand as a mainstay of the country, free from interference,” he said.

Protecting Creativity in the Age of AI

At the same event held at Pustaka Raja Tun Uda, the Prime Minister proposed new legal measures to safeguard the authenticity and copyright of local creative works. This move is particularly important with the rise of artificial intelligence technologies that can easily plagiarize or misappropriate creative content.

“This protection must cover not just cartoonists but also filmmakers, poets, and other artists whose works are at risk,” Anwar explained. The goal is to ensure that creativity is not hindered by legal disputes over copyrights or authenticity.

Advancing Local AI Expertise with Cultural Integrity

Anwar also called for the growth of home-grown AI experts who can develop policies and technologies aligned with Malaysia’s cultural and religious values. He noted that much of AI’s current data and development is dominated by Western countries and China, which may not fully reflect local norms.

“We acknowledge AI as a new technology, but our national policies will keep cultural, religious, and value-based considerations at the forefront,” he said.
