Aon has launched an enterprise-level AI Risk Diagnostic to help organisations assess and manage the risks tied to artificial intelligence. The tool, announced on 30 July 2026, comes as insurers and other businesses embed AI more deeply into underwriting, claims, and operations, creating new governance and compliance challenges.
How the diagnostic works
Built by Aon's Global Risk Consulting team, the assessment aligns with the ISO standards, the EU AI Act, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. Client inputs are analysed through two lenses. The AI Maturity Analysis examines governance, lifecycle management, processes, and controls. The AI Risk Taxonomy Analysis identifies areas where AI may introduce new risks or intensify existing exposures across the organisation.
For insurance professionals, the diagnostic's alignment with these frameworks provides a practical starting point. Resources like AI for Insurance can help teams build on such assessments with targeted training on governance and compliance.
What clients receive
Clients get tailored reporting that includes an overall maturity picture, governance gaps, and priority actions. Reports feature visual dashboards, heat maps, and risk exposure mapping across AI risk domains. Prioritised recommendations aim to strengthen governance, controls, compliance, and resilience.
By linking maturity with risk exposure, Aon says the diagnostic helps organisations spot gaps in governance and understand where AI may create operational, regulatory, cyber, liability, and business risks.
Leadership perspective
Richard Waterer, Aon global risk consulting leader, said: "Artificial intelligence is creating significant opportunities for organisations, but it is also introducing new and increasingly complex risk considerations across governance, compliance, operations and resilience."
Waterer added: "As boards, regulators and stakeholders seek greater visibility into how AI is being deployed and governed, organisations need a clearer understanding of their AI maturity, control environment and exposure. Our AI Risk Diagnostic helps provide that visibility, enabling leaders to make better-informed decisions about governance, oversight and responsible innovation."
The launch builds on Aon's broader investment in data, analytics, and technology-enabled capabilities. It sits alongside offerings like Aon Broker Copilot, Aon Claims Copilot, and the firm's Risk Analyzer suite. Aon operates in more than 120 countries and is one of the largest captive managers globally through Aon Captive & Insurance Management.
Why this matters for insurance professionals
Insurers carry a dual burden: they must manage AI risk within their own operations while underwriting emerging AI exposures for clients. A structured diagnostic that maps maturity against risk taxonomies gives risk managers and captive leaders a clear baseline for conversations with boards, regulators, and capacity providers. The tool's output can inform decisions about coverage language, risk appetite, and control frameworks as AI adoption accelerates across the industry.
