Apple Overhauls Siri With AI Integration, Stock Slips on Uncertain Reception
Apple announced sweeping updates to Siri and its operating systems on Monday, marking the company's most significant push into AI after years of delays. The new Siri AI will access cloud computing and the internet while drawing on personal data stored on Apple devices, such as email and text messages.
Apple's stock fell nearly 2% following the announcement at its Worldwide Developers Conference in California. Analysts see potential in the changes, but consumer adoption remains uncertain until the features roll out later this year.
What Siri Can Do Now
The new Siri will operate as a standalone app and integrate into the search function, Photos app, and other services. Apple demonstrated the assistant finding online information, pulling addresses from emails, recommending restaurants, and organizing photos into albums.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president for software design, framed the update as a privacy-focused alternative to competitors. "Some appear to be racing forward, seemingly pursuing AI for the sake of AI without clear regard for the people that it ultimately meant to serve," he said. "We believe that truly helpful AI must be centered around you and your needs."
Siri has significantly lagged behind rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude in handling complex queries and performing digital tasks.
The Skepticism Problem
Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, called the upgrade substantial given Siri's current limitations. "It looks like it's a pretty big upgrade," he said. "It will work very cleanly into a whole slew of things that consumers might already do."
But analysts flagged execution risk. Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, said Apple faces a "prove-it moment." He called the announcement "ticking a box, but still uninspiring," noting that Apple's previous AI missteps have eroded trust.
"The proof is going to have to be in the delivery, in the execution," Newman said.
Francisco Jeronimo at IDC saw a different approach. Apple wants AI to "disappear into the operating system" rather than make chatting with an AI the focus. "If Apple makes AI feel natural, private and useful for mainstream users, it could redefine what consumers expect from every device they use," he said.
How Apple Is Building This
Apple is relying on Google's Gemini AI model as the foundation for its system, a partnership announced in January. Newman noted that licensing Gemini is cheaper than building proprietary AI from scratch, unlike competitors pouring billions into self-developed systems.
The new Siri will launch in the U.S. later this year in English, with other languages following. It won't be immediately available in the European Union or China due to regulatory constraints.
Broader OS Changes and Parental Controls
Beyond Siri, Apple announced new parental controls allowing parents to restrict which websites children can access, which apps they can download, who can contact them, and how much device time they receive.
The move comes as AI and social media companies face lawsuits over alleged harms to minors, including mental health impacts and exposure to inappropriate chatbot conversations.
Leadership Transition
Tim Cook opened and closed Monday's keynote with brief remarks in what will likely be his final WWDC as CEO. In September, he will hand leadership to John Ternus, who currently oversees Apple's hardware development.
Cook's 15-year tenure saw Apple's stock price rise roughly 2,000% on a split-adjusted basis. He expanded Apple's services business with products like Apple Pay and Apple Music, and developed custom microchips for Apple devices. Critics have argued he lacks his predecessor Steve Jobs' ability to drive breakthrough innovation, instead delivering incremental device updates.
