State Bank of India is moving its entire cheque processing operation to AI, a shift Chairman CS Setty said will free up staff from manual back-office work for higher-value roles. The country's largest lender is rolling out the technology across fraud prevention, proactive risk management, and anti-money laundering to cut manual workloads. "Our total cheque processing is moving to AI," Setty said at a press briefing after the bank's quarterly earnings. "It releases a lot of workforce which is currently employed in manually doing it."
AI targets high-volume back-office work
"We will be using AI extensively in fraud prevention, proactive risk management and anti-money laundering. These are all high-volume activities in the back office," Setty said. The technology targets repetitive, rule-based processes rather than customer-facing roles. The shift follows a pattern familiar to operations teams: AI takes over the repetitive core of a process while people handle exceptions and judgment calls. AI for Operations covers this kind of workflow automation. Setty said operational improvement is the focus, with employees expected to move from manual processing to higher-value work that requires judgment and customer engagement. What customers can expect
For customers, the wider AI adoption should mean faster processing of banking services, improved fraud detection, and quicker transaction monitoring. The bank did not indicate any major changes to branch services or customer interaction channels. On the bank's subsidiaries, Setty ruled out immediate plans for stake dilution or fresh listings beyond existing entities. Why this matters for Operations
SBI's move is a concrete example of AI absorbing high-volume, rule-based work in a large organization. Operations teams running cheque processing, transaction monitoring, or similar back-office functions should expect AI to take over the repetitive core of those jobs. The shift also signals that operations roles will be redefined around exceptions, judgment, and customer engagement rather than manual processing. Operations managers planning similar automation projects can work through an AI Learning Path for Operations Managers that covers process optimization and workflow automation.
