India's ambition to become a developed nation by 2047 rests on combining the National Education Policy 2020 with artificial intelligence in its schools, an analysis of the country's education system argues. With 14.7 lakh schools, 26 crore students, and 95 lakh teachers, the system's success will determine whether India's young population becomes a competitive advantage.
Nearly one-fourth of India's 1.4 billion people are under 25, giving the country one of the world's youngest populations. The analysis, published in August 2026, argues that education is the most effective instrument for converting that demographic dividend into global economic strength.
NEP 2020 shifts the focus from memorisation
The National Education Policy 2020 was designed to move Indian schools away from rote learning and memorisation toward practical-based learning that builds digital literacy, critical thinking, and creativity. The policy provides the roadmap, the analysis says, while artificial intelligence offers the technological engine to achieve its goals.
Digital connectivity is already in place to support this shift. India has more than 90 crore internet subscribers, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and government programmes such as Digital India, PM eVIDYA, DIKSHA, and SWAYAM have put digital learning resources within reach of more students.
AI as a complement to teachers, not a replacement
The common fear that AI will replace teachers is misplaced, the analysis argues. Teachers perform roles machines cannot replicate: inspiring students, nurturing creativity, building values, and providing emotional support. "AI is most effective when it complements the role of educators," it says.
For teachers, AI can handle automated assessment, lesson planning, attendance management, and learning analytics, freeing time for mentoring and classroom interaction. Integrating AI into these programmes could improve personalised learning, teacher support, multilingual education in Odia, and school governance, the analysis says. Strengthening digital infrastructure in rural and tribal areas would let the state contribute to India's goal of becoming a global knowledge leader by 2047.
