Avathon and IIT Roorkee plan physical AI lab for industrial autonomy

Avathon and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) announced plans on September 7, 2026 to establish the Avathon Physical AI Lab, a research initiative housed in IIT Roorkee's Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The lab will focus on advancing Physical AI for industrial operations, targeting complex problems in supply planning, logistics, and autonomous systems that learn continuously from knowledge rather than static data sets.

The partnership links Avathon's commercial expertise in industrial autonomy with IIT Roorkee's research capabilities in optimization, machine learning, knowledge representation, and multi-agent systems. The lab intends to support doctoral fellowships, collaborative research projects, student internships at Avathon, and technical workshops that connect the initiative to the broader AI for Science & Research community.

A direct line from academic research to industrial deployment

The Avathon Physical AI Lab will work alongside Avathon's newly formed AI Center of Excellence in Bangalore. Research emerging from IIT Roorkee is expected to feed directly into production systems across mining, energy, manufacturing, logistics, and aerospace. The Bangalore center will anchor Avathon's engineering presence in India and serve as the primary industrial counterpart to the academic work.

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, said the lab strengthens the connection between research and real-world industrial challenges. He described Physical AI as a frontier that combines artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and physical operations - a direction that aligns with India's technological self-reliance goals.

Prof. Sugata Gangopadhyay, the lab's principal investigator, emphasized the combination of academic freedom and industrial relevance. "Working alongside Avathon, a company at the forefront of bringing Physical AI to industrial operations, gives our researchers both the problems and the ambition worthy of them," he said.
