BGSU Leads Nation with First AI+ Bachelor’s Degree Blending Artificial Intelligence and Specialized Fields

BGSU introduces the nation’s first AI + X Bachelor’s degree, combining AI skills with fields like computer science, history, and journalism. The program includes ethics, programming, and prepares students for AI-driven careers.

BGSU Launches Nation’s First AI + X Bachelor’s Degree

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is set to introduce a new Bachelor of Science degree that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with a secondary discipline. Pending approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the AI + X program will begin this fall, combining AI fundamentals with applications in six fields: computer science, mathematics, physics, history, journalism, or public relations.

This interdisciplinary approach allows students to develop expertise in AI alongside deep knowledge in their chosen domain. The goal is to equip graduates with skills to increase efficiency, design tailored AI solutions, and support AI-driven tools relevant to their field.

Program Structure and Curriculum

The program will be housed within the Department of Computer Science. Coursework includes Python programming, machine learning, AI ethics, and data visualization. Students will explore how AI functions technically and how it applies within specific industries.

Faculty emphasize the importance of blending technical AI skills with domain-specific knowledge. This combination prepares students to contribute meaningfully to their fields by developing AI solutions that address real challenges.

Preparing for the Future Workforce

JK “Jake” Lee, chair of the Department of Computer Science, highlights the program’s focus on equipping students with both technical depth and cross-disciplinary perspectives. The AI + X degree aims to prepare graduates for roles such as AI developers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers, as well as positions integrating AI across scientific research, social policy, creative industries, and business analytics.

A 2024 PwC report shows AI-related job postings are growing 3.5 times faster than average, with sectors using AI experiencing up to five times greater productivity growth. This program positions students to meet the increasing demand for professionals capable of applying AI effectively.

Ethics and Responsible AI Use

Ethics is a core component of the curriculum. Students will examine the societal impact of AI and consider accountability when AI systems cause harm. This focus ensures graduates understand both the capabilities and responsibilities associated with AI technologies.

Zak Hart, brand engagement director at Hart Inc., supports this emphasis on ethics. He notes that as AI adoption grows, it’s critical for professionals to use AI responsibly and respect intellectual property.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Program

BGSU plans to add more disciplines to the AI + X degree, including art, manufacturing, engineering, and business. Interest in the program is strong, with current and prospective students eager to enroll.

Why This Matters for Science and Research Professionals

  • The AI + X degree prepares graduates to apply AI tools and methods directly within their scientific or research fields.
  • Understanding AI’s ethical considerations ensures responsible innovation.
  • Combining AI with domain expertise drives practical problem solving and innovation.

For professionals seeking to deepen AI skills alongside their current expertise, exploring courses and certifications in AI may be beneficial. Resources such as Complete AI Training offer a range of options to build practical AI knowledge.
