BHP Launches AI Hub in Singapore to Boost Mining Operations
BHP is setting up its first Industry AI Hub in Singapore to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in mining and resources. The new hub will address enterprise-wide challenges by applying AI technologies aimed at improving safety and increasing productivity across BHP’s operations.
Starting this month, a team of BHP AI experts will work on integrating data-driven decisions, intelligence, and automation into the company’s core processes. This initiative supports BHP’s ongoing digital transformation and commitment to smarter operations.
Why Singapore?
With support from Enterprise Singapore and in partnership with AI Singapore (AISG), BHP chose Singapore due to its strong innovation ecosystem and advanced digital infrastructure. The location aligns well with BHP's goal to scale technology solutions that provide real operational value.
The hub will also help grow BHP’s digital capabilities within Singapore and the surrounding region. Several AI specialists will lead collaborations between BHP teams and local AI partners to tackle specific business challenges.
Proven AI Impact at BHP
BHP’s partnership with AISG builds on previous successes using AI to enhance procurement and financial forecasting. On the operational side, AI-driven plant controls at the Escondida copper mine in Chile have saved 3 billion litres of water and 118 GWh of energy since fiscal year 2022.
The Singapore AI Hub aims to expand such projects, encouraging collaboration and skill development to unlock AI’s full potential across BHP’s operations. More initiatives and partnerships are expected as the program develops.
