BlackLine released Verity Prepare, a multi-agent AI system that automates manual accounting steps from document review to audit-ready reconciliations, the company announced July 28. The system is built to reduce the time finance teams spend on fragmented financial close tasks while preserving full audit trails and human control.
How Verity Prepare works
The system coordinates a "specialised digital workforce" of AI agents to handle the full preparation process. These agents ingest supporting documents, spot anomalies, draft variance explanations and assemble a complete reconciliation package, ready for a human reviewer to approve. Instead of relying on separate tools for each step, the agents work within a single, coordinated workflow.
The design departs from standard text-based AI assistants by combining multi-agent automation with governance features that address the expectations of users, management, auditors, audit committees and regulators. BlackLine said Verity Prepare is now generally available after an early adopter programme.
Balancing automation and human oversight
Rather than pushing for full autonomy, BlackLine emphasises transparency and human approval. The system drafts reconciliations and explanations, but the final sign-off remains with a finance professional. BlackLine CEO Owen Ryan said:
"Finance organisations aren't looking for AI that simply automates more tasks - they are looking for AI they can trust with their most critical financial processes. Trust isn't achieved through autonomy alone. It comes from transparency, governance and maintaining robust human oversight. Verity Prepare gives finance teams the confidence to deploy AI across one of accounting's most complex processes while keeping professionals firmly in control."
The approach places Verity Prepare in a growing category of AI for Finance tools designed to handle entire workflows rather than isolated tasks. By automating the end-to-end preparation, the company says manual effort drops significantly without sacrificing auditability.
Why this matters for finance teams
Accountants and controllers facing tight close deadlines now have an option that cuts manual document matching and reconciliation work while leaving approval steps intact. Verity Prepare aims to free up time for analysis and judgment - the parts of the close that still require a human eye - without introducing hard-to-trace black-box decisions.
