Borouge Tests AI-Driven Autonomous Operations at UAE Petrochemical Facility

Borouge, a leading provider of polyolefins solutions, has teamed up with Honeywell to test AI-powered autonomous operations at its UAE plant. This collaboration focuses on delivering the petrochemical industry’s first AI-driven control room capable of full-scale, real-time operation.

This proof of concept aims to set new operational standards by integrating advanced AI and machine learning technologies directly into plant control systems.

Advancing Operational Efficiency and Safety

Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, highlights the company’s AI, Digitalisation, and Technology (AIDT) transformation program as a key driver for improving operational efficiency and business performance. Partnering with Honeywell allows Borouge to implement innovative automation solutions that accelerate growth and increase shareholder value.

By applying Agentic AI and autonomous control capabilities, the collaboration will identify fresh opportunities to optimize production processes, reduce energy consumption, and enhance safety measures across Borouge’s Ruwais facilities.

Industry Impact and Future Outlook

George Bou Mitri, president of Honeywell Industrial Automation for the Middle East and surrounding regions, states that this project exemplifies how AI and automation can improve efficiency and safety on a large scale. Integrating these technologies into core operations is expected to reshape how industrial plants operate.

The Ruwais site, poised to be the largest petrochemical complex worldwide, stands to benefit significantly from autonomous operations. This initiative aligns with Borouge’s broader AIDT strategy, which has already generated substantial value through over 200 initiatives covering operations, health and safety, sales, sustainability, and product innovation.

  • Projected value generation from the AIDT program in 2025: $575 million
  • Value generated in 2024 from diverse AIDT initiatives: $573 million
