Broadridge Uses AI to Simplify Financial Disclosures for Irish Investors

Broadridge Financial Solutions is developing AI technology to translate complex investment documents into plain language, targeting a gap in financial literacy that keeps Irish savers from moving money out of deposit accounts.

The Dublin-based project, backed by IDA Ireland, will test how artificial intelligence can strip jargon from fund disclosures while maintaining regulatory accuracy. The work addresses a concrete problem: nearly half of the 50 largest UK asset managers write investment materials at an academic reading level that most retail investors cannot easily follow.

Ireland hosts over €5 trillion in fund assets and leads Europe in ETF trading, yet retail investor participation remains low. Research from the European Commission's 2023 Eurobarometer Survey found only 18% of EU citizens demonstrate high financial literacy.

The Scale of Undeployed Savings

Approximately €14 trillion sits in European household savings accounts, according to Broadridge's analysis. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of these deposits, but many savers lack confidence to invest because they cannot understand the available options.

Stephen Johnston, Senior Country Officer at Broadridge Ireland, said the company has analyzed how dense language creates a barrier to investment. "By applying AI to create plain-language communications while maintaining regulatory compliance and accuracy, we can measurably boost engagement and help move Irish savers from deposit accounts into long-term investments."

What the Project Will Do

Broadridge's research will investigate how AI-driven plain-English communications can transform fund documentation into accessible information. The initiative aligns with the European Commission's Financial Literacy Strategy and regulatory frameworks including the UK FCA's Consumer Composite Investment initiative.

Results will be shared with industry stakeholders and regulators to inform best practices across financial services.

Why This Matters for Communications Professionals

For PR and communications teams in financial services, this project demonstrates a practical application of generative AI and LLM technology to solve a business problem: making complex products understandable to audiences.

Communications professionals managing investor relations, product launches, or regulatory messaging increasingly work with AI tools that simplify language while preserving accuracy and compliance. Understanding how these systems function-and their limitations-is becoming essential. AI for PR & Communications covers practical applications of these technologies in corporate messaging and stakeholder engagement.

Broadridge's Dublin team works with asset managers and fund administrators across Ireland's financial services sector, navigating regulations including PRIIPs, MiFID, and Solvency II.
