Carnegie Mellon leads national study on AI in arts education

Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts will lead a two-year, nationally focused study on integrating artificial intelligence into arts education, supported by roughly $300,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts and a dollar-for-dollar match from the university. The project will map how K-12 and higher education institutions are responding to generative AI and produce a public guide for training future artists and designers.

"Our goal is to help folks in higher education and schools talk about how we should work creatively, skillfully and ethically with AI," said Daragh Byrne, who teaches in CMU's School of Architecture's Computational Design program and leads the Working Group on Artificial Intelligence in the College of Fine Arts. "Every campus was navigating it on their own. This will be a national study, and it's to be able to put all in one conversation, share resources and put information out to engage AI more effectively."

Building a national picture

Researchers will complete a field scan of how arts education and creative industries are responding to generative AI across K-12 and higher education, Byrne said. The study will also describe how colleges and universities are adapting their arts and creative practice programs.

"It will build a coherent picture of how we're responding to it," Byrne said.

The stakes are substantial. The arts and culture sector represents a $1.2 trillion industry in the United States, according to the National Endowment for the Arts, and AI is poised to shape that economic footprint. Project partners include Creative Generation in South Portland, Maine; the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Penn State's Art and Design Research Incubator.

Addressing resistance head-on

Artists have adapted to technological shifts before - Byrne cited photography as a historical example - but AI presents distinct challenges because of its rapid pace of advancement. Concerns range from intellectual property disputes to the technology's potential effect on creative jobs.

"There is a clear resistance to AI because of these concerns, and that gets in the way of engaging AI within education," he said.

The study will produce a public guide for higher education institutions on how to train future artists and designers to use AI creatively, critically and ethically while preserving human skills. For working creatives, the research offers a chance to shape how AI gets taught and adopted - rather than having those decisions made without practitioner input. Byrne framed it as an evidence-based approach: "We're trying to build ways with the NEA support to give educators, policy makers and families real evidence so they can make decisions about creatives' futures, without guessing."

Why this matters for creatives

For artists, designers and other creative professionals, this study signals that AI literacy is becoming a core competency rather than an optional skill. The guide that emerges from the research will likely influence how universities structure their arts programs - which means working creatives who engage with AI for Creatives training now may find themselves better positioned as curricula and industry expectations shift. The project also gives creative professionals a stake in defining ethical and practical standards for generative art tools, rather than leaving those norms to technologists alone.
