China launches global AI education platform to expand digital learning access
China has released a global AI education service platform designed to provide cross-border access to digital learning resources and integrate AI into classrooms. The platform was unveiled during the 2026 World Digital Education Conference in Hangzhou on May 14.
The initiative builds on Smart Education of China, an existing digital education platform already available in around 220 countries and regions. Chinese authorities said the upgraded version will support international sharing of educational resources and include new features such as a lifelong learning hub and a Chinese language learning community.
What's in the platform
The system connects AI tools, online learning resources, and international access through a state-backed infrastructure. Officials framed the expansion as a way to bridge the global digital divide by distributing high-quality resources and digital tools to underserved regions.
China also released a report on its progress in smart education policy and released a separate AI education initiative calling for greater use of AI to support human development and sustainable learning outcomes.
Why this matters for educators
The launch signals that AI education is becoming embedded in digital infrastructure strategy, not confined to individual classroom experiments. By centralizing AI tools and learning resources on a single platform with international reach, China is positioning itself to influence how schools adopt AI literacy and workforce training globally.
This also reflects broader competition over who controls the platforms, standards, and learning systems that will shape how students and educators engage with AI. For schools and education leaders, it raises questions about where digital learning infrastructure comes from and what standards govern it.
