Cision acquires Trajaan to add AI search monitoring to PR Newswire

Cision has acquired Trajaan, a search intelligence and generative AI monitoring platform, and is folding its capabilities into PR Newswire's Amplify suite and the wider Cision product stack. The deal gives the distribution platform a way to track how brand and corporate content surfaces inside AI-generated search results at a moment when traditional search engine optimization is giving way to answer engine optimization.

For communications directors and PR operations teams, the practical implication is direct: the distribution platform they already use for press releases is now building infrastructure to measure whether that content appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and similar AI-mediated surfaces. That is a capability most enterprise comms teams do not yet have from any vendor.

Why Trajaan and why now

Trajaan had carved out a niche in answer engine optimization, the practice of engineering content so it is cited or summarized by large language models rather than simply indexed by a crawler. As AI search tools redirect query traffic away from blue-link results, brands that measure only click-through rates and traditional media pickup rely on an incomplete picture of their actual reach.

Cision's existing PR Newswire infrastructure already claims a minimum 2x advantage in search visibility over competing distribution networks, based on domain authority and web traffic benchmarks. Adding Trajaan's monitoring layer means that advantage can now be measured and reported inside AI search environments, not just on standard search engine results pages.

The timing tracks with the 2026 MarTech Breakthrough Awards, where Cision took three honors announced on August 6: Brandwatch was named Social Listening Solution of the Year, PR Newswire won Press Release Distribution Company of the Year, and the Amplify platform was recognized as AEO Platform of the Year. The AI for SEO Specialists designation signals that industry evaluators now treat AI search discoverability as a distinct, measurable discipline.

For enterprise comms teams, monitoring AI search is no longer an add-on. It is quickly becoming the only honest way to measure where a brand's narrative actually lands.

What the Amplify platform looks like now

PR Newswire's Amplify platform was already positioned as an end-to-end workflow tool before this deal, combining campaign planning, AI-assisted content creation, multichannel distribution, and reporting in one interface. The Create+ module converts a single press release into supporting assets such as blog posts, short-form videos, and media pitches automatically. The Plan module lets communicators surface trending industry news and build a full campaign strategy before writing a word.

Trajaan slots in at the measurement end of that workflow. Where Amplify previously reported on traditional media pickup and web placements, Trajaan's technology monitors how content is retrieved and represented by generative AI systems. That closes a gap that has been widening since AI overviews became standard features in major search engines.

The distribution backbone remains PR Newswire's network of more than 510,000 media outlets, newsrooms, and influencers worldwide. Editors supporting that network average more than 12 years of experience and operate around the clock with a stated 99% accuracy rate, according to the company.

For PR teams learning to work with genAI tools, the skills involved in adapting press releases for AI summary tools overlap with the AI for Public Relations Specialists skill set.

What enterprise communications teams should do

Procurement and marketing operations leaders evaluating or renewing distribution contracts in 2026 face a landscape where the metrics of success have shifted. Traditional shares and domain authority still matter, but AI search citation rate is becoming a meaningful stand-in for brand authority in an environment where a significant share of information queries never reach a traditional results page.

Cision's move to acquire rather than build this capability internally suggests the company viewed Trajaan's monitoring methodology as sufficiently differentiated to warrant full integration rather than partnership. For enterprise buyers, the capability should deepen over time as the data feeds into Cision's broader media intelligence and social listening layers.

Teams that have not yet added AI output tracking to their measurement frameworks should treat this acquisition as a forcing function. When a major distribution platform bundles AI search data into its standard reporting, the absence of that data in a competitor's reporting package becomes harder to defend to a CMO or communications VP asking where the brand actually shows up.

Why this matters for marketers

If your organization distributes press releases or tracks organic visibility, the contract renewal you sign this year will likely include the first real measurement of whether AI systems cite your content. Marketing teams that don't include any pilot around answer engine metrics are operating on assumptions rather than data. The benchmark is no longer whether your two largest competitors have this capability. It's whether your own team can answer a simple question: when she asks the AI, does it mention us?
