Coinbase introduces stock options, AI adviser and pre-IPO markets

Coinbase on Tuesday unveiled a sweeping expansion into stock trading, derivatives, AI-powered advisory and consumer finance, advancing CEO Brian Armstrong's vision of an "everything exchange" that competes with brokerages, banks and fintech firms alike.

The announcements, part of the company's latest "System Update," include tokenized stocks backed one-for-one by U.S. equities, options trading for both crypto and equities, and new derivatives tied to private companies and thematic baskets. Customers can now transfer stock portfolios from other brokerages and trade U.S. stocks, ETFs and indexes through Coinbase Advanced alongside digital assets.

Derivatives push targets pre-IPO and thematic exposure

Coinbase is broadening its derivatives business with perpetual futures linked to baskets such as artificial intelligence, defense and Chinese equities. The platform also introduced pre-IPO perpetual futures offering exposure to private firms like SpaceX, which went public earlier this month, with contracts for OpenAI and Anthropic expected to follow later this year. Prediction markets are another area of focus, with short-term crypto prediction contracts and bundled wagers that let traders combine multiple forecasts into a single position.

AI adviser and automated trading agents

The exchange registered an AI-powered investment advisory tool called Coinbase Advisor with the SEC. Available initially to U.S. Coinbase One subscribers, the service provides portfolio recommendations, tax-loss harvesting guidance and market analysis. Coinbase is also building tools that allow AI agents to execute trades automatically within user-defined limits, a feature that puts algorithmic execution directly into retail and institutional hands.

These moves come as AI reshapes financial services from advisory to portfolio management. Coinbase's registration with the SEC distinguishes the tool from unregulated chatbots that have proliferated across trading platforms.

Consumer finance and credit products

Beyond trading, Coinbase is layering in consumer finance features: a travel portal that pays 5% bitcoin rewards on bookings, a USDC-backed version of its Coinbase One credit card, and borrowing against staked Solana through integrations with Jito and Morpho. The company is positioning these as a way to keep assets within its ecosystem while generating yield and spending power.

Why this matters for finance professionals

Coinbase's expansion blurs the line between crypto-native platforms and traditional brokerages. For finance professionals, the integration of tokenized equities, derivatives on private companies, and SEC-registered AI advisory signals that the infrastructure for multi-asset, algorithmically managed portfolios is moving from specialist firms to mainstream exchanges. The ability to trade pre-IPO exposure, stock options and crypto derivatives from a single account could compress margins for incumbents and force faster adoption of automated, AI-driven tools across the industry.
