The Douglas County School District in Colorado is integrating artificial intelligence into classrooms and teacher workflows, with a focus on teaching students to use the technology safely, ethically, and responsibly. Superintendent Erin Kane said the district views AI not as a tool for cheating, but as a capability students must learn to manage as it becomes embedded in everyday tools like browsers and search.
Douglas County has piloted several AI programs over the past three years. As a Google district, classrooms are now committed to using Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Google Classroom regularly.
Teaching discernment alongside technical skills
"I think it's important that we teach our kids how to use AI safely, ethically, responsibly, intelligently and with discernment," Kane said.
The district is rethinking how assignments are designed rather than banning AI outright. "We have to rethink how we do assignments to make sure that our kids are able to get those foundational skills that are so important and that they're learning to leverage everything that's available to them," Kane said. She emphasized that AI is a support tool, not a replacement for human reasoning.
Teachers in the district are also using the technology to reduce administrative load. "The teachers can use AI to help them with their tasks," Kane said. "To help with their administrative burdens so they can spend more of their time practicing their craft, which is actually teaching the children."
Kane said she is confident that schools will find a productive balance. "I am confident that as a society we will find a way to maximize our use of that technology without getting ourselves all tangled up," she said.
Certification deadlines and long-term goals
The district is now working toward Gemini certification for middle school and high school staff and students by spring break 2027. Kane stated that students will continue to learn fundamental writing skills while also adapting to tools that are reshaping work and civic life.
"Students will absolutely still learn fundamental writing skills and all of those things that they really need, and also they're going to learn to leverage this great new technology in a way that could do amazing things in the future for our planet, for our country, for our local community here," she said.
