Construction Firm Deploys Real-Time AI Translator for Foreign Workers
Daewoo Engineering & Construction has rolled out a real-time AI translator designed to address communication gaps between site managers and foreign workers on Korean construction projects.
The company developed the system with technology partner Lotte Innovate to handle a growing workforce challenge. Foreign workers now make up a significant portion of Korea's construction labor force, creating practical obstacles during safety briefings and daily operations.
How It Works
The translator supports roughly 180 languages and uses voice processing to minimize delays between spoken instruction and translation. Workers receive translations on personal smartphones during morning roll calls and on-site safety meetings.
The system includes a construction-specific glossary loaded with technical terms and site slang. This specialization improves accuracy compared to general-purpose translation tools.
Current Deployment
Daewoo is testing the translator at two locations: the Sewoon 6-3-3 office site in Seoul's Jung-gu district and the Gwacheon G-TOWN development project. The Sewoon site serves as a pilot for smart safety technology.
A company official said instruction comprehension has improved since deployment and expects accident prevention benefits to follow.
