Digital Promise and ed-tech company QuantHub announced a multiyear partnership this week to embed AI, data science, and cybersecurity skills into K-12 career education across the United States. The initiative responds to research showing 92% of jobs now require or likely require digital skills, pushing schools to rethink how they prepare students for a workforce where technology knowledge is no longer confined to tech roles.
What digital fluency means in practice
Digital Promise defines digital fluency as knowing why, when, and how to apply technology to develop ideas and solve complex problems. The organizations emphasize that this goes beyond operating a specific device or software. The goal is to equip students to make decisions about how technology can be useful across different professional settings.
"When we look at how rapidly the nature of work is changing, we have to ask ourselves if our learning environments are truly keeping pace," Digital Promise President and CEO Jean-Claude Brizard said in a public statement. A 2022 study from the Burning Glass Institute found that 37% of the top 20 skills requested for the average U.S. job changed between 2016 and 2021.
The partnership aims to broaden how K-12 classes approach technology instruction, which has often concentrated on basic digital literacy or narrow career tracks. "This partnership is about creating systemic access. By making digital fluency a foundational element of every learning pathway, we are ensuring students can translate their skills across industries whether they are entering healthcare, trade professions, the technology sector, or starting their own business," Brizard said.
Building on existing programs
The effort will involve schools, colleges, universities, employers, and community organizations in introducing advanced digital skills to a wider range of career pathways. Students will have opportunities to earn credentials tied to employment opportunities, particularly with local employers. The partnership also prioritizes AI for Teachers training, helping educators incorporate digital skills into courses they already teach rather than relying solely on standalone technology classes.
"The hard part is delivering that at scale," QuantHub CEO Joshua Jones said. "That means giving teachers the training to embed these skills into the courses they already teach, and tying what students learn to credentials employers actually recognize."
Both organizations bring existing infrastructure to the table. Digital Promise's Cybersecurity Pathways Initiative already works with school districts and employers to create career-connected programs that lead to credentials. In Alabama, those programs reach more than 35,000 students, with graduates entering fields including cybersecurity, healthcare, hospitality, and skilled trades. QuantHub runs a Data Ambassadors program that trains teachers in data and AI skills, and a Data Scholars program connecting students with paid industry projects.

The partnership signals a shift in expectations for K-12 teachers. Rather than adding separate technology requirements, schools will need to weave AI for Education competencies into existing subjects-from healthcare pathways to skilled trades. For teachers, this means professional development that focuses on integrating data science and AI concepts into their current curricula. The long-term plan includes studying student outcomes and using those findings to guide expansion across the U.S., which could shape district-level decisions about technology investments and teacher training priorities in the coming years.
