Discovery Education adds AI chat to Google Classroom add-on
Discovery Education will launch a teacher-facing AI chat interface inside its Google Classroom add-on, giving educators direct access to district-licensed, standards-aligned content through plain-language prompts. The feature, built on Gemini models, enters an Early Feedback Program with select K-12 districts this fall.
The tool addresses a specific tension in classroom AI use: speed versus instructional quality. Teachers who use AI save an average of 5.9 hours per week, according to Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation. But time saved matters little if the materials retrieved don't meet district standards or pedagogical requirements.
How the interface works
A teacher planning a lesson can describe the topic, grade level, and instructional constraints in a single prompt. The system returns vetted Discovery Education resources from the district's existing license. Teachers can refine results through follow-up conversation, adjusting for reading level, specific standards, or available class time.
The resources available through the interface include Experience for K-12, Social Studies Essentials for K-5, Science Techbook for K-12, and Social Studies Techbook for grades 6-8. Each product carries its own instructional design: Science Techbook uses phenomena-driven instruction, while Social Studies Essentials is built on the C3 Framework.
Built with educators, not just for them
Discovery Education is running the feature through an Early Feedback Program before broader release. Elko County School District in Nevada is among the first participants. Sarah Jolley, Technology Coordinator and Digital Coach at the district, said the partnership aims to "reduce complexity, personalize learning, and empower educators to spend more time creating meaningful experiences for students."

"The new AI interface within the Discovery Education add-on addresses that need by bringing trusted content into teachers' natural workflow, all grounded in more than 20 years of teaching and learning excellence."

Governance and compliance
AI-sourced results respect existing content governance settings at the district level. Discovery Education is SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified and adheres to COPPA, FERPA, and applicable state privacy laws. Districts control what content the AI can surface, which reduces the risk of unvetted materials entering lesson plans.
