Elsevier expands LeapSpace to include over half of recent global research citations

Elsevier's LeapSpace AI workspace now draws on 23 million full-text peer-reviewed articles and books, alongside 2.6 billion cited references from Scopus. The content expansion, announced September 16, means the tool covers 56% of all recent global research citations and 42% of all research articles published since 2021, giving it the largest foundation of highly cited scientific research available to any AI research platform.

The expansion is backed by new licensing deals with BMJ Group, JAMA Network, Rockefeller University Press, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Existing partners Emerald Publishing, IOP Publishing, and Sage Publishing also contributed selected full-text content. More than 1,500 scholarly publishers and societies are now part of the content base, which includes Elsevier's own full-text articles and books plus 100 million scientific records from Scopus spanning 7,000 publishers.

A cross-publisher foundation designed for the full research workflow

LeapSpace is built as a research-grade AI workspace that supports researchers from study design through manuscript preparation. Nine out of ten users surveyed said the tool is essential to completing literature reviews or substantially contributes to them. Researchers report using it to design study protocols, generate research data, write manuscripts and theses, and prepare work for submission.

Judy Verses, President of Academic and Government at Elsevier, said: "Most AI tools give researchers answers. LeapSpace helps researchers achieve better outcomes across their whole workflow, while supporting their critical thinking, igniting their curiosity, and keeping them in control. LeapSpace is grounded in trusted science, transparent in how it works, and publisher-neutral by design."

Independent oversight to close the trust gap

Elsevier's own Researcher of the Future Report found that 84% of researchers have used AI tools, but only 22% trust them. To address this, the company formed a LeapSpace Advisory Board with five independent experts from research institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia. The board will advise on algorithm transparency, publisher-neutral content discovery, and responsible AI use in scientific settings.

Chancellor's Professor Emeritus Jörg-Rüdiger Sack of Carleton University, who chairs the board, said: "Trust in AI depends on more than how powerful the technology is. Researchers need confidence that the underlying content is selected fairly, that algorithms operate transparently and that the same standards are applied consistently across publishers."

Founding members include Professor Jodi Schneider of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Holger Hoos of RWTH Aachen University and Leiden University, Professor Fei Wu of Zhejiang University, and Dr. Mikiko Tanifuji of Japan's National Institute of Informatics. LeapSpace also won Best Generative AI Solution at the 2026 CODiE Awards.

Why this matters for researchers

LeapSpace now offers the broadest cross-publisher full-text foundation of any AI research tool. For working scientists, that means literature searches and synthesis draw on a corpus that represents the majority of recent high-impact citations - not a narrow slice of open-access content or a single publisher's catalog. The tool is available to institutions and corporations globally, with individual plans and free access for academics and students.
