The findings reveal a concentrated source pool. The top 15 domains account for roughly 68 percent of all citations AI engines pull from.
Reddit Leads by a Wide Margin
Reddit is the single most-cited source across all major AI answer engines, appearing in approximately 40 percent of generative answers. No other source comes close to that share.
Journalistic content ranks second, accounting for 27 percent of all citations. For time-sensitive queries, journalism's share rises to 49 percent.
Citation Patterns Shift Rapidly
The research documents severe volatility in how AI engines cite sources. In one six-week window in 2025, a leading source's citation share on a major platform fell by roughly 50 percentage points following a single upstream change to search parameters.
This means citation patterns can change substantially within weeks, not months or years.
