Fake News Site Built With AI Exposed in Florida

The South Florida Standard was a complete fabrication. Journalists from The Florida Trib discovered that the site's entire staff-including editor-in-chief Sofia Delgado-existed only as AI-generated headshots and fictional biographies.

No human reporters worked there. The site republished content stolen from legitimate outlets like Florida Politics, running it through AI before posting under fake bylines.

Once exposed, the site's administrators deleted staff bios and took the site offline.

A Network of Fake Outlets

The Florida Trib traced the operation to Discoverability Co., a Philadelphia-based reputation management firm run by Drew Chapin. Chapin previously pleaded guilty to investor fraud in 2021.

Investigators found similar fake local news sites in South Carolina and California. Chapin admitted to building 17 AI-driven news sites across the country.

Those sites generated more than 3,500 URLs and attracted over 44,000 visitors combined.

Speed and Scale

Chapin demonstrated how quickly this works. He showed investigators how to launch a fake local news site in 15 minutes using a $10 domain and an AI prompt.

The operation relied on speed and volume rather than sophistication. The goal was to create sites that looked credible enough to deceive readers, not to produce quality journalism.

What This Means for Writers

For working writers and journalists, this case illustrates a concrete threat. As newsrooms shrink and real outlets close, fake AI-generated sites can fill the void with content that appears legitimate but serves only to manipulate.

Understanding how generative AI and LLM technology enables this kind of deception matters for anyone in media. The ability to spot fabricated bylines, stolen content, and AI-generated reporting is becoming a professional necessity.

Experts warn that such operations pose a growing threat as midterm elections approach and legitimate local news outlets continue closing. Readers have fewer trusted sources to verify information against.
