Florida State University has been awarded four projects totaling over $2.6 million from the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, positioning the university to lead federal work in AI, quantum computing, nuclear science, and advanced energy. The contracts mark a deliberate push by FSU to compete with the nation's top research institutions for funding in fields tied to economic and national security.

The Genesis Mission unites national labs, industry, and universities to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, physical sciences, and security. The DOE distributed 278 awards during a July summit in Washington, D.C. FSU's four projects - run through its physics department and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering - will all use AI and machine learning to tackle problems ranging from nuclear reaction modeling to quantum error correction.

"Our success in securing federal research funding begins with our faculty - pursuing bold ideas, submitting record numbers of grant proposals and tackling challenges that matter to Florida and the nation," FSU President Richard McCullough said. "From health care and energy independence to national security, FSU has the talent, infrastructure and proven track record to compete for major federal investments."

What the Genesis Mission funds

The awards come as FSU builds a broader federal research portfolio. Its Center for Advanced Power Systems recently secured an $88 million U.S. Navy contract to develop power and energy systems for future ships. The university's Colleges of Nursing and Medicine also received a $1.6 million NIH grant to train nurse scientists in digital health and AI. The four Genesis projects focus on practical solutions for national security challenges, including rebuilding a domestic supply chain for high-performance fusion magnets and advancing fault-tolerant quantum computers.

"We are incredibly proud of our faculty for securing these historic awards, which will inspire next-generation breakthroughs and solidify FSU's role as a trusted partner in federal scientific leadership."

Four FSU-led projects

The Phase One awards last nine months, after which teams can apply for a second funding round expected next year. Some projects involve collaborators from Texas A&M University, the University of Notre Dame, and manufacturer High Temperature Superconductors Inc. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, headquartered at FSU, is also working on a fifth award led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Here are the four FSU-led efforts:

  • AI-Powered Manufacturing of High Temperature Superconductors for Fusion Energy: A team is building an AI model to help create a U.S.-owned supply chain for the technology, aimed at national energy security.
  • Teaching AI to Fix Quantum Errors: Researchers will develop AI that acts as a real-time diagnostic system, interpreting streams of indirect error signals from quantum computers.
  • Accelerating Cosmic Discovery in Particle Physics: AI will analyze data from the DUNE experiment, which shoots invisible particles 800 miles through the Earth to compare observations with simulations and probe why the universe is full of matter instead of antimatter.
  • AI and Quantum Computing for the Next Generation of Nuclear Science: The project combines AI and emerging quantum methods to better understand atomic nuclei and other quantum systems, with potential impacts on clean energy and security.
