Fonio raised $17 million in a funding round led by 20VC, valuing the automated communications platform at $140 million. The company, which launched just over a year ago, provides an AI phone agent for small and medium-sized businesses and claims to be the market leader in Europe.
Rapid growth and product traction
Co-founder Daniel Keinrath initially handled about 20 product demonstrations daily while co-founder Matthias Gruber built the software independently. The company now employs more than 50 people and serves approximately 10,000 customers. Fonio reported over 30 percent month-over-month growth, adding $1.5 million in annual recurring revenue in the last month alone. The company expects to reach $10 million in annual recurring revenue by the summer.
Broadening the communications suite
Building on its core phone agent, Fonio recently launched an AI-powered WhatsApp agent. The roadmap includes email agents, chatbots, and an AI-first customer relationship management platform. For professionals focused on AI for PR & Communications, these additions offer centralized, automated tools to handle routine media or client inquiries at scale. The integration of multiple messaging channels also supports modern AI for Customer Support workflows, allowing smaller teams to manage high volumes of interactions without proportional headcount growth.
Competing with larger enterprises
Fonio's long-term mission focuses on helping smaller businesses compete with large enterprises by providing them with advanced tools traditionally reserved for bigger organizations. "A little over a year ago, the plan was simple: build the #1 AI phone agent for SMBs," the company said in a statement. "Today Fonio is the #1 AI phone agent for SMBs in Europe." The company added that its mission remains unchanged: "give SMBs the tools to compete with the largest enterprises on earth."
Hiring push
To support this growth, Fonio is currently hiring across more than 35 positions. The company is offering €10,000 referral bonuses for successful hires.
Why this matters for PR and communications professionals
Communications teams at small and mid-sized firms often lack the resources to staff 24/7 phone lines or instant messaging channels. Automated agents allow these teams to capture inbound media inquiries, route urgent client requests, and maintain consistent response times without hiring additional staff. As these platforms integrate email and CRM features, communications professionals can track interactions and automate routine follow-ups, freeing up time for strategic messaging and relationship building.
