Framestore Names Theo Jones as Creative Director of AI

VFX studio Framestore promoted Theo Jones to Creative Director of AI, a newly created role overseeing the global launch of Futon, a platform that integrates machine learning and generative AI into VFX production workflows.

Jones will focus on connecting evolving AI technologies with the practical demands of high-end film, advertising, episodic content, and immersive experiences. His background includes an Academy Award nomination for visual effects supervision on Disney's Christopher Robin, plus credits on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Paddington 2.

What Futon Does

Futon operates as a dedicated platform where expert users build complex AI and ML workflows, then package them into tools accessible to non-specialist artists. The system prioritizes full model provenance-a record of which AI models were used and how-giving clients complete visibility into AI-assisted content creation.

Jones said the platform gives artists the control needed to respond to client feedback while maintaining strict data security and usage controls. Machine learning has been embedded in Framestore's workflow for over a decade, he noted, underpinning many of the tools artists currently use.

Why This Matters for Creatives

The role reflects a shift in how studios approach AI. Rather than treating new technology as spectacle, Framestore is positioning AI as a precision tool for specific creative problems. Mel Sullivan, CEO of Framestore, said the company has always paired technology with creative need, avoiding tools for their own sake.

For creative professionals, this signals a practical path forward: AI integrated into existing pipelines with artist control intact, not replacing human decision-making but accelerating execution once decisions are made.
