GE HealthCare Expands Radiation Oncology Portfolio with New AI Solutions

GE HealthCare has announced significant updates to its radiation oncology offerings, introducing AI-powered tools to enhance patient care and improve workflow efficiency. The company revealed these advancements at the 2025 European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) Congress in Vienna, Austria.

Among the key highlights is the U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance of MR Contour DL, an AI model that uses deep learning to automate segmentation of organs at risk (OAR) during radiation therapy planning. This innovation aims to reduce manual workload while providing consistent and accurate organ contouring.

Enhancing Timeliness and Precision in Cancer Care

Cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with nearly ten million fatalities annually, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Early detection and treatment can save approximately one-third of these lives. GE HealthCare’s new solutions target this critical need by enabling faster, more precise radiation therapy.

The company plans to integrate Spectronic Medical AB’s MRI Planner software into its portfolio. Spectronic, based in Helsingborg, Sweden, specializes in advanced image analysis designed to improve clinical workflows in radiation oncology. Their MRI Planner leverages AI to convert standard MRI scans of the brain, head-neck, and pelvis into synthetic CT images necessary for treatment planning. This supports MR-only radiotherapy workflows, reducing reliance on multiple imaging modalities.

According to Dr. Carl Siversson, CEO of Spectronic Medical, their technology combined with GE HealthCare’s global reach aims to make radiotherapy more precise, personalized, and accessible worldwide.

This technology complements GE HealthCare’s existing MR-guided radiotherapy tools such as the AIR™ RT Coil Suite and AIR Recon DL, which enhance imaging quality. Kelly Londy, president and CEO of MR at GE HealthCare, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing MR imaging for radiation therapy to improve treatment accuracy.

New AI Model Streamlines Radiation Therapy Planning

The newly FDA-cleared MR Contour DL uses detailed MR images to automatically segment 37 organs and structures in the head-neck and pelvic regions. This automation replaces a previously manual and time-consuming step, improving consistency and speed during treatment planning.

MR Contour DL integrates with GE HealthCare’s Intelligent Radiation Therapy (iRT) digital solution, which manages the entire radiation therapy workflow. When combined with MRI Planner, AIR RT Coil Suite, and AIR Recon DL, it creates a fully AI-driven, MR-only simulation workflow designed to deliver highly precise radiation treatments.

Updated Intelligent Radiation Therapy (iRT) Solution

GE HealthCare also presented an updated version of its iRT software, which further supports MR imaging and third-party AI applications. Key enhancements include:

  • An orchestrator that hosts and integrates multiple AI applications simultaneously, allowing for complex workflow management.
  • Incorporation of MR imaging workflows to reduce the time from diagnosis to treatment, particularly for head-neck, brain, and pelvic cancers.

Dr. Ben Newton, general manager of Oncology at GE HealthCare, noted that although cancer cases are expected to rise, survival rates continue to improve thanks to advances in technology, early detection, and better treatments. The expansion of GE HealthCare’s radiation oncology portfolio reflects ongoing efforts to support positive outcomes for patients worldwide.
