GE HealthCare Advances AI-Powered MRI Systems for Faster Research and Clinical Work

GE HealthCare announced new AI-enabled MRI technologies at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine annual meeting in May 2026. The company introduced updated hardware, software, and deep learning tools designed to reduce scan times, improve image quality, and help researchers collaborate more effectively across sites.

The announcements center on three areas: accelerated imaging through deep learning, a new workflow platform, and research collaboration tools. Together, they address a practical problem in medical imaging - researchers and clinicians spend time on repetitive tasks, scan variability across sites creates inconsistent data, and moving discoveries from the lab to patient care takes longer than necessary.

Faster Scans Without Sacrificing Quality

GE HealthCare expanded its Sonic DL deep learning acceleration technique to cover 2D imaging beyond cardiac applications. The company says up to 85% of MRI exams could benefit from this acceleration, which reduces scanning time while maintaining or improving image quality and signal-to-noise ratio.

The company also expanded AIR Recon DL, its deep learning reconstruction technology, to support Zero Echo Time (ZTE) and low-acoustic noise imaging. ZTE imaging produces bone and lung images comparable to CT scans without ionizing radiation.

A New Workflow Platform

SIGNA One is a new AI-guided workflow ecosystem designed to reduce friction throughout the MRI process. It includes an intuitive interface that minimizes training time for operators with varying experience levels and allows one-click switching between clinical and research modes within a single exam.

Built on this platform, SIGNA Bolt is a 3T MRI system that GE HealthCare says streamlines imaging pathways while maintaining low energy consumption. SIGNA Sprint with Freelium offers helium-free operation with less than 1% helium usage, eliminating the need for vent pipes without increasing power requirements or reducing image quality.

Tools for Research Collaboration

GE HealthCare introduced SIGNA Studio, a suite of software development and collaboration resources for MRI research. The tools are designed to make research software more accessible and faster to deploy across institutions.

The company also announced two new installations of MAGNUS, an investigational head-only MR scanner designed for neuroscience research. King's College London and West China Hospital will each receive a system to advance work in microstructural imaging, diffusion analysis, and functional brain imaging techniques.

GE HealthCare is integrating icometrix's icobrain platform into its neuro care pathway to strengthen quantitative brain MRI analysis. The integration aims to support more personalized neurological care, particularly for Alzheimer's disease.

Kelly Londy, president and CEO of MR and Women's Health at GE HealthCare, said the focus is on "enabling the research ecosystem that helps researchers explore new questions, scale collaboration and translate discoveries more efficiently to broaden clinical impact."
