GIA President Calls for AI Adoption to Boost Insurance Efficiency in Ghana

The President of the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), Seth Kobla Aklasi, has urged insurance professionals in Ghana to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their operations. Speaking at the opening of the GIA’s 3rd annual International Educational Seminar in Accra, Aklasi highlighted AI's ability to process claims and assess accidents in real time, leading to faster account crediting and improved service delivery.

“AI-enabled tools can process claims in real time, especially in the medium to short term. Additionally, AI can assess accidents in real time and credit accounts instantly,” he explained. This reflects a clear opportunity for insurers to streamline workflows and reduce delays.

Aklasi stressed the importance of innovation within Ghana’s insurance sector to keep up with global standards and best practices. The seminar, held from May 14 to 16, 2025, carried the theme “Innovating Together – Building a Resilient Insurance Future.” It aims to equip industry players with insights to benchmark international standards and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth.

The event attracted a diverse group of experts, including Ghanaian insurers, reinsurers, and professionals from marketing, corporate communications, economics, management, and IT. This cross-disciplinary approach supports comprehensive learning and collaboration.

Regulatory Support to Drive Innovation

Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, reaffirmed the National Insurance Commission’s (NIC) dedication to creating a supportive environment for insurance companies. He emphasized that the NIC will promote innovation and efficiency by actively engaging with stakeholders and providing leadership.

“The NIC will continue to provide an enabling environment through active listening, collaboration, and leadership with key stakeholders,” Ohemeng-Baah said, expressing confidence that this strategy will enhance industry performance.

Capacity Building and Networking

Sponsored by WAICA Re, the seminar provided valuable capacity-building opportunities for insurance practitioners. It also served as a platform to network and exchange ideas with peers and industry leaders.

The lineup of speakers included five Ghanaian experts and Mulenga Mutati, President of the Zambia Insurance Association, offering regional perspectives and expertise.
