More than 2,000 policymakers, educators and parents gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday for the inaugural Global Education Summit, a two-day event addressing the region's talent pipeline and the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into academic pathways. Co-organised by the South China Morning Post and HSBC Premier at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, the summit comes as families across Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia face an increasingly complex set of choices for secondary and pre-university students.

The event drew principals and admissions officers from over 40 leading secondary schools and universities, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. Sessions focused squarely on practical concerns: how AI reshapes skill demands, how academic routes are shifting, and what makes a city attractive to global talent.

Hong Kong's two-way talent highway

Opening the morning session, Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin said Hong Kong was transforming the traditional study-abroad trend from a "one-way street into a two-way global highway." She pointed to concrete government moves to expand science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and allocate more land for higher education.

"We have set a clear goal. By the 2026-27 academic year, 35 per cent of all undergraduate students at our government-funded universities will be enrolled in STEAM disciplines," Choi said. The target signals a deliberate push to align graduate supply with industries where AI and automation are redrawing job requirements fastest.

Skills that outpace automation
