Google Cuts 200 Sales and Partnerships Jobs to Focus on AI and Data Centers

Google recently laid off about 200 employees in its global sales and partnerships division. This move, reported by The Information and confirmed by Reuters, reflects the company’s shift in focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) development and expanding data center infrastructure that supports these technologies.

According to Google, these workforce changes are intended to improve team collaboration and enhance customer service. However, the reduction highlights a broader trend among tech giants prioritizing AI innovation while scaling back on other areas.

Earlier Layoffs in Platforms and Devices

Just a month before, in April 2025, Google cut hundreds of jobs within its Platforms and Devices division. This group manages key products like Android OS, Chrome browser, and Pixel smartphones. Some of the affected roles were based in Google's Bengaluru and Hyderabad offices.

Sources say additional job cuts are planned in India, especially in advertising, marketing, and sales functions. Google described these reductions as part of an effort to become more agile, following the integration of its Platforms and Devices teams last year.

Tech Industry Layoffs Continue

Since January 2023, Google’s parent company Alphabet has trimmed about 12,000 jobs, representing roughly 6% of its global workforce. As of December 2024, Alphabet employed over 183,000 people worldwide.

Other tech leaders are also downsizing. Facebook’s parent company Meta cut 5% of its workforce in January 2025, focusing on lower-performing employees while boosting hires in machine learning roles. Microsoft laid off 650 Xbox staff in late 2024, Apple cut 100 jobs, and Amazon eliminated entire teams last year.

What Sales Professionals Should Take Away

  • AI development is driving strategic shifts in tech companies, influencing where they allocate resources.
  • Sales and partnership roles may be reduced or restructured as companies focus on AI and data infrastructure.
  • Staying adaptable and building skills related to AI and data technologies can improve career resilience.
