Google will invest €13 billion in Finland over the next two years to expand its AI and cloud infrastructure, the largest single investment the company has made in Europe. The spending covers data center expansion, clean energy projects, and local economic partnerships, and arrives as demand accelerates for services like Search, Maps, and Gemini.

The announcement builds on Google's 15-year presence in Hamina, where a former paper mill became a data center. That site already supports more than 600 Finnish suppliers across construction, operations, and network fiber. The new investment phase, concentrated in 2027 and 2028, will support over 37,000 jobs nationwide during construction and add an estimated €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP, according to the company.

What the money funds

Google is expanding data center capacity in Hamina and adding new sites in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. Once operational, the facilities will support thousands of permanent roles - from computer technicians and electrical engineers to security, catering, and facilities management. The company also committed €31 million to local community programs over four years, including AI upskilling partnerships with local colleges for more than 4,400 workers and training pathways for 100 Finnish students targeting data center careers.

On the energy side, Google signed a 22-year agreement to support the life extension of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. It is also adding new onshore wind capacity and contracting for a 94-megawatt battery system designed to stabilize electricity prices during cold, windless periods. Environmental projects include native forest and wetland restoration near its sites, plus publicly accessible trails, saunas, and fishing piers.

Google's Hamina facility already uses a seawater-based cooling system and supplies offsite heat recovery to local homes and businesses.
