Government launches free AI literacy platform targeting one million people
The Irish Government has opened AIReady.ie, a free online platform designed to teach artificial intelligence skills to a million people across the country. The initiative provides short courses accessible on smartphones, tablets and laptops, allowing users to learn at their own pace.
SOLAS, in partnership with the National Skills Council, built the platform to make AI education accessible regardless of prior technical experience. Four introductory courses are now live, each taking less than 30 minutes to complete.
Tailored courses for specific groups
The initial course offerings target older people, sole traders, farmers and people returning to work. Each course focuses on foundational AI literacy and practical skills applicable to daily work and life.
Minister Niamh Smyth said at the launch: "Through my work at the Department of Enterprise, I've seen first-hand how transformative the AI opportunity can be, and equally, how important it is that no one gets left behind."
What this means for government workers
For those in public sector roles, understanding AI fundamentals has become essential. Government agencies increasingly deploy AI tools for policy analysis, service delivery and operational efficiency. This platform offers a low-barrier entry point for civil servants and public employees to build baseline knowledge.
Smyth encouraged participation across regions, saying: "I'd love to see Cavan and Monaghan lead the way in AI literacy in Ireland."
