Hackett Group report finds AI automates 70% of hiring processes and cuts time-to-fill by 32%

Organizations using AI-powered talent acquisition technology are automating over 70% of hiring processes and reducing time-to-fill by an average of 32%, according to The Hackett Group's 2026 Talent Acquisition Vendor Assessments released today. The report arrives as HR departments face a 9% increase in workload alongside shrinking full-time equivalent (FTE) and operating budgets, forcing a 9% rise in technology spending to maintain recruiting output.

What the report covers

The Hackett Group evaluated 12 talent acquisition technology providers across 28 criteria, including candidate and recruiter experience, internal mobility, interview solutions, onboarding, analytics, and platform flexibility. The assessment measured both capability ratings and value realization, capturing customer-reported impacts on metrics like cost per hire, qualified applicant improvement, and candidate diversity. The full 59-page report also includes a free 22-page summary available with registration.

Beyond the 32% faster time-to-fill, end users reported a 72% average improvement in hiring activity automation and a 70% increase in recruiter efficiency for daily tasks. These gains are helping organizations sustain recruiting functions even as they handle more work with fewer dedicated staff.

AI adoption accelerates across the hiring lifecycle

Job description generation and candidate matching remain the most common AI use cases, but customers are moving into areas like advanced analytics reporting for strategic workforce planning. Talent acquisition technology providers are pouring investment into agentic AI over the next 12 to 24 months, aiming to speed recruiters' tasks while offering candidates conversational interfaces that deliver a personalized, guided experience.

"AI adoption in talent acquisition is ramping up in organizations from small and medium-sized businesses to large enterprises," said Matthew Merker, senior research director for HCM Solution Intelligence at The Hackett Group. "As AI solutions become more readily accepted, talent acquisition technology providers are blazing forward with new capabilities to improve candidate matching and recruiting operations while protecting organizations from risks such as candidate fraud."

Why this matters for HR professionals

For talent acquisition teams running on tighter budgets and higher workloads, the report offers a data-backed roadmap for evaluating technology that moves the needle on measurable outcomes. The 32% improvement in time-to-fill and 72% automation lift aren't hypothetical-they're averages drawn from customer interviews. HR leaders who are building a business case for AI can use these benchmarks to justify investment and to shortlist vendors that demonstrate real impact on recruiter efficiency and candidate quality.
