Half of small business owners now use AI to handle creative work
Small business owners are juggling five major roles simultaneously - customer service, marketing, bookkeeping, social media management, and creative direction - according to a survey of 1,000 American entrepreneurs. That workload adds up to over 200 bonus hours annually.
Fifty percent of respondents say they use AI tools regularly or occasionally to manage these tasks. The adoption rate reflects a practical response to a real problem: 69% of owners would prefer to outsource creative work, but cost and control concerns keep most from hiring help.
Where small business owners turn to AI
Research tops the list of AI applications, with 56% of owners using AI for that purpose. Design and visual content creation comes in second at 46%.
When asked where AI delivers the most value, 30% point to design and visual content creation as most useful - second only to research at 33%. Social media management, which consumes time for 41% of owners, represents another area where AI is filling gaps.
Natalie Van Dusen, founder of Treeline Coffee, described the shift bluntly: "Running a business means wearing a lot of hats. Managing branding, marketing and everything else made it hard to focus on what matters most. But now AI and creative tools are giving me that time back."
The confidence factor
Only one in five owners felt fully prepared to handle creative and marketing demands when starting their business. That gap is closing with AI adoption.
Nearly three-quarters of owners who use AI say it has increased their confidence in handling tasks outside their expertise. Thirty-eight percent of those familiar with AI cited its availability as a factor in their decision to start a business.
