Hensoldt Advances AI-Based Image Evaluation in European EDF STORE Project

Hensoldt, a leading sensor solutions provider, has completed its second measurement campaign as part of the European research initiative STORE (Shared Database for Optronics image Recognition and Evaluation). The campaign focused on gathering data to develop AI-driven image evaluation algorithms, collaborating closely with other partners within the STORE consortium.

The initial measurement campaign was conducted last year in Fontevraud, France, establishing the groundwork for a shared European database intended for AI algorithm testing and training. This year, eight STORE partners participated in a second campaign held in Kongsberg, Norway. Here, signatures of land and air vehicles were recorded across various operational scenarios in a snow-covered environment.

Hensoldt deployed a technology demonstrator vehicle equipped with multiple sensor systems, including the SETAS 360° vision system and additional cameras optimized for long-range observation and reconnaissance. These sensors captured critical data to support the development of advanced image recognition capabilities.

Next Steps: Data Analysis and Algorithm Development

The collected data will now be analyzed to help build and enrich the shared database. According to Christina Canitz, Head of Division Optronics at Hensoldt, the insights from this study are key to developing modern algorithms that analyze sensor data effectively. These algorithms assist soldiers by automatically detecting and classifying objects within image data, enhancing situational awareness while maintaining safety inside land vehicles.

Sensor systems like those used by Hensoldt allow for comprehensive environmental perception without exposing personnel to external risks. The integration of AI-driven image evaluation supports operational decision-making with a broad range of information processed in real-time.

About the STORE Project

  • Consortium: 21 partners from eight EU countries plus Norway
  • Objective: Develop new image evaluation technologies focusing on artificial intelligence
  • Key outputs: Joint test and training database, exploration of various machine learning approaches
  • Funding: €23 million from the European Defence Fund

The STORE project aims to standardize and enhance AI capabilities in optronics by creating a shared resource that benefits all partners. This collaborative framework ensures AI models are trained on diverse datasets reflecting multiple operational environments.

For IT and development professionals interested in AI applications similar to those in defense sensor systems, exploring practical AI training can provide valuable skills. Resources such as Complete AI Training offer courses on AI algorithms, image recognition, and related technologies that support advanced sensor data analysis.
