FundamentAI Demonstrates How AI and Nature Can Co-Design Cities of Tomorrow

Artificial Intelligence continues to expand its role beyond simple tasks like drafting emails or creating stylized images. Its potential to positively influence urban design and sustainability is becoming increasingly evident. One compelling example is the “FundamentAI” installation showcased at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Presented by ecoLogicStudio, “FundamentAI” blends AI, biotechnology, and environmental data to propose a new form of responsive urbanism. This project fits within the Biennale’s theme, “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.,” which highlights the integration of different kinds of intelligence to tackle modern architectural challenges.

Collaboration and Inspiration

Developed in partnership with the Synthetic Landscape Lab at Innsbruck University and the Urban Morphogenesis Lab at Bartlett, UCL, “FundamentAI” draws inspiration from Venice’s traditional wooden ‘bricole’ poles. These have been reimagined as bio-fabricated, biodegradable 3D-printed columns embedded with technology that senses environmental changes.

Specifically, these columns interact with data from the Venetian lagoon’s microorganisms, monitoring factors such as acidity and microbial activity. This data informs adaptive responses in the installation, creating an environment that evolves with its natural context.

AI Technologies at Work

The installation employs a combination of AI tools to process and visualize ecological data in real time. DeepSeek-R1 and GPT-4o analyze images and texts submitted by users, while FLUX.1-dev generates images through ComfyUI. TRELLIS manages 3D modeling, and Kling AI produces animations. Together, these technologies create architectural forms that shift according to both user input and the lagoon’s ecological signals.

Architectural and Sensory Experience

“FundamentAI” is presented as a full-scale immersive environment where the 3D-printed columns respond to environmental changes with subtle lighting shifts. These light effects translate data streams—such as changes in light intensity, water acidity, and microbial growth—into atmospheric variations. Visitors experience a tangible connection between architecture and ecology.

A New Approach to Urban Design

By embedding AI and ecological data into urban design, “FundamentAI” moves away from static, human-centered architecture. Instead, it envisions cities where natural systems actively participate in shaping built environments. This approach encourages more sustainable, adaptive urban futures that respond to ecological dynamics.
