How AI is Changing the Financial Planning Profession
Artificial intelligence (AI) is making a strong impact on financial planning, but not without raising concerns. According to a report by FPSB India, 47% of financial planners worry about data privacy and cybersecurity when it comes to AI. These concerns highlight the need for careful implementation and ongoing vigilance.
Accuracy and reliability are also on the minds of decision-makers. About 42% of top executives in financial companies remain skeptical about AI outputs, doubting whether they can fully trust the technology’s results. This hesitation slows down adoption but doesn’t stop it entirely.
Positive Outlook on AI Benefits
Despite these challenges, the report reveals a strong belief in AI’s potential benefits. Over 78% of financial planners think AI can help them serve clients more effectively. Meanwhile, 60% expect AI to improve the quality of the financial advice they provide.
Adoption of AI is especially common in small and very large firms, with two-thirds of companies either using AI now or planning to within the next year. Half of financial planners view AI positively, while only a small fraction—8%—hold a negative opinion.
AI’s Role in Cost and Access
Financial planners also see AI as a way to reduce costs. Nearly 59% believe AI will help lower the expense of financial planning services. Additionally, 60% think AI will increase access to financial planning for underserved populations, potentially broadening the reach of these services.
Professional Development and Education
The report points out that around 49% of financial firm executives want more professional development focused on data analysis and interpretation skills. This shows a clear need for upskilling to fully leverage AI tools.
Moreover, 36% believe both the financial planning profession and the public would benefit greatly from education and training on AI. This suggests that knowledge sharing will be key to making AI a trusted part of financial planning.
Human Connection Remains Central
FPSB CEO Dante De Gori, CFP, notes that AI allows financial planners to work smarter, freeing up time to focus on deeper client relationships. This includes handling difficult conversations that affect financial decisions and helping clients stay on track with their life goals.
- AI can assist with routine tasks, making planners more efficient.
- Human insight remains crucial for personalized advice and emotional support.
- Effective use of AI requires balancing technology with empathy and understanding.
