Arizona is quietly shifting how education is delivered through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in two pioneering schools: Unbound Academy and Novatio School. These institutions are among the first in the state to incorporate AI into their core teaching methods. Importantly, this approach is about enhancing the role of educators, not replacing them with technology.

An evolving role for teachers in the age of AI

At Novatio School in Phoenix, middle school teacher JP Guerra has seen a change in his daily routine. AI now handles many administrative tasks such as grading and lesson planning. This shift allows Guerra to prioritize mentoring, facilitating discussions, and offering personalized support to students. “AI helps us do the stuff we got into teaching for,” Guerra says. The technology adapts academic content to match each student’s learning speed and comprehension, providing instant feedback and enabling students to move forward after mastering material, rather than following a fixed timetable.

From worksheets to real-world projects

With AI managing routine tasks, students gain more time for hands-on, project-based learning. Afternoons at Unbound and Novatio are dedicated to entrepreneurial projects, digital storytelling, and developing video games or mobile apps. Ivy Xu, CEO of Prequel—the education group behind both schools—explains, “Our goal is to prepare students for an AI-native world, not just academically but creatively.” This approach also includes teaching life skills often missing from traditional programs, such as leadership, personal finance, and media literacy, which are crucial in today’s technology-driven economy.

Closing the gap in financial education

Financial literacy is not yet required statewide in Arizona, but Novatio is addressing this by partnering with Prequel and the 2-Hour Learning platform to offer free workshops across the Valley. Workshops like “$10 Skills vs. $10,000 Skills” and “Building Your Dream Life” focus on real-world money management, including budgeting, credit understanding, and calculating living costs based on local job and housing data. Xu points out, “These courses empower students with tools to succeed financially, especially where such education isn’t standardized.”

Making innovation accessible

Despite the focus on technology, accessibility is key. Unbound Academy is tuition-free, and Novatio participates in Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program, providing options for families throughout the Phoenix area. MacKenzie Price, co-founder of 2-Hour Learning, emphasizes, “This isn’t about gimmicks or screen time. It’s about giving every student the chance to learn at their own pace and build something meaningful.” These schools view AI as a partner to personalize learning, foster creativity, and prepare students for future challenges.
