Howard Gardner, the Harvard psychologist known for his theory of multiple intelligences, has a message for educators: AI is about to make much of traditional schooling optional. In a recent exchange with education policy scholar Frederick Hess, Gardner argued that by 2050, students may need only a few years of formal schooling in the basics before pursuing their own interests with AI as a tutor and guide.
Gardner, who has spent decades studying how humans learn and think, said his thinking shifted after watching AI code lengthy research interviews in moments - work that takes human researchers many hours. "Watching AI do in moments what takes a human many hours got me thinking about its educational implications," he said.

The "optional mind" argument
Gardner's most provocative claim builds on his 2006 book Five Minds for the Future, in which he called for cultivating what he termed the disciplined, synthesizing, and creative minds. He now believes AI will handle those cognitive tasks so well that "pursuing them will become optional for our species."
That doesn't mean humans should stop learning, he stressed. "Anyone who wants to master a discipline, or to synthesize or create, has my complete respect and admiration," he said. But he draws a firm line at two capacities he says must remain distinctly human: the "respectful mind" and the "ethical mind."
Hess, a longtime skeptic of ed-tech promises, pressed Gardner on whether this is just another round of overhyped claims. Gardner acknowledged that earlier technologies - radio, internet, laptops - failed to transform schooling as promised. But he said AI is different. "The question isn't whether to use AI but how and with what benefits and costs," he said.
What schooling looks like after age 10
Gardner's vision for education is not the end of school but a radical shortening of it. Every child should still master reading, writing, math, and basic coding alongside peers and skilled educators, he said. But around age 10, once those basics are in hand, "students should be free to pursue their own interests with the help of AI, peers, and appropriate coaches."
He argues that well-designed AI "will outperform even the most gifted instructor" and that corralling young people in classrooms for a dozen years to explore the same issues the same way no longer makes sense when many could learn more effectively on their own.
In practice, Gardner said students' initial interests can anchor exploration across academic disciplines. He pointed to his recent blog posts showing how an interest in genes can guide students across subjects, and how mathematics can be approached through the range of human intelligences. He cited the progressive education traditions of John Dewey and schools he has visited from the Boston area to Reggio Emilia, Italy, as models for what this could look like.
Addressing the screen-time problem
Hess raised concerns from scholars like Jonathan Haidt and Jean Twenge about the devastating impact of phones, social media, and ubiquitous screens on youth mental health. Schools, he noted, may be one of the few places where children still get sustained, in-person interaction with peers and mentors.
Gardner, a grandfather of five, said he shares those concerns. Even after the basics are mastered, he said, young people should still spend considerable time with peers, especially those with different backgrounds, interests, and beliefs. He suggested models ranging from the Boy Scouts to Sunday School, with updated versions for today still to be developed. "What matters is that young people learn to work together, particularly on challenging ethical and moral issues," he said.
On the question of academic knowledge, Gardner pushed back against the idea that content is obsolete. "I am all in favor of a deep, broad academic grounding," he said, noting that American students already struggle with basic civic knowledge - once, more teens knew the names of the Three Stooges than the three branches of government. "If we don't thoughtfully rethink education, we will be completely unable to deal with the not-always-brave-new-world that technology has ushered in."

Gardner's advice for teachers is practical rather than prescriptive: learn about AI, experiment with it, watch others experiment, and discuss what you've learned. "In the best Dewey democratic manner, decide what to 'gift' or 'consign' to AI and what to do yourself," he said. "Above all, keep an open mind."

It's to start figuring out which parts of your teaching are genuinely irreplaceable - the ethical reasoning, the respectful debate, the human connection - and which parts AI can handle just as well.
