Israel's Military Establishes New Cyber Division to Integrate AI and Field Operations
The Israeli Defense Force unveiled a new cyber defense division on Wednesday called Alumot, designed to develop and deploy artificial intelligence and information systems across combat operations. The division combines soldiers, technology professionals, researchers, and AI experts to address real operational challenges.
Major-General Aviad Dagan, commander of the IDF's Communications and Cyber Defense division, said the unit will work to make AI and information capabilities available to troops on the front lines. "The battlefield is evolving before our eyes and requires us to learn and innovate at all times," Dagan said in a statement.
AI systems reshaped recent military operations
The IDF's existing data and applications unit, called Matzpen, played a central role in recent military operations. The unit manages and distributes AI and large-scale data analysis across the military.
Matzpen developed a system called LOCHEM that handled all planning for airstrikes during recent operations, coordinating with specialized air force units. The unit's work demonstrated how field soldiers and advanced technology combine to produce operational results.
Combat experience shapes new structure
Dagan previously commanded an air base and participated in combat flights during recent operations. His background in both air force operations and technology development influenced the new division's design, which integrates combat experience with technical expertise.
The Alumot division will operate alongside existing IDF branches rather than replace them, functioning as a hub that develops solutions and distributes them to operational units.
For IT and development professionals, understanding how organizations integrate AI systems into operational workflows offers lessons applicable beyond military contexts. Organizations across sectors face similar challenges: combining technical capabilities with field expertise, managing data at scale, and iterating quickly based on real-world feedback.
