IEEE report ranks health technology as the top megatrend for 2030

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) released its Technology Megatrends 2030 report on Wednesday, ranking health technology above all other trends for its potential to reshape human life by 2030. The analysis, drawn from experts across AI, energy, space, robotics, and biotech, found that advances in healthcare will have the largest impact on humanity over the next five years.

"Health technologies emerge as among the most transformative and humanity-beneficial, driven by a fundamental shift from reactive treatment to proactive protection," said Dejan Milojicic, IEEE fellow and chair of the IEEE Future Directions Committee Industry Advisory Board.

Health technology outranks other megatrends

The IEEE report assessed five core technology areas: artificial intelligence, energy, health and biotech, space tech, and robotics. Experts surveyed for the report placed health and biotech at the top of the list in terms of potential benefit to humanity. The shift reflects a broader move away from treating illness after it occurs and toward technologies that prevent disease before it starts.

Six areas driving health tech advancement

The report identified six specific technological areas that will advance healthcare:

  • Personalized medicine
  • Genetic engineering and gene therapy
  • Accessible early disease diagnostics and biomarkers
  • Molecular therapeutics
  • Protein synthesis
  • Understanding life

IEEE graded personalized medicine, genetic engineering and gene therapy, and accessible early disease diagnostics and biomarkers the highest for impact, likelihood of success, maturity, and adoption. These categories reflect a shift toward data-driven, individualized care, a domain where AI for Healthcare is increasingly central to turning complex patient data into actionable clinical decisions.

From virtual nursing to personalized nutrition

Over the next five to ten years, IEEE expects health tech advances to reduce preventable chronic diseases, improve personalized clinical outcomes, and strengthen food safety. The report also points to the growing role of physical AI systems in supporting aging populations.

"As populations age, using physical AI technologies, such as virtual nursing and intelligent monitoring, will become vital to supporting the needs of an expanding revitalized economy," Milojicic said. "At the same time, we see food systems being reimagined as core healthcare infrastructure, using AI-enhanced tools like smart traceability to deliver personalized nutrition and curb chronic disease at scale."

Trust and privacy remain barriers

The report lists several enablers for these advances, including biotechnology, digital health tools, agricultural drones, and personalized nutrition platforms. But it also warns of significant inhibitors. Data privacy and security concerns around public health surveillance and epidemiology could slow adoption. A culture of reactive treatment remains a hurdle.

"Our panel of experts is clear that none of this works without robust trust, privacy, and safety standards guiding how these technologies are built and deployed," Milojicic said.

Why this matters for healthcare professionals

The IEEE findings signal a rapid shift in how care will be delivered and reimbursed. For clinicians, hospital administrators, and public health workers, the next five years will bring a greater emphasis on AI-driven diagnostics, genetic profiling, remote monitoring, and nutrition-based interventions. Familiarity with these tools-and the ethical frameworks that govern them-will become a core part of clinical practice, not a niche specialization. The report makes clear that the technology is maturing faster than many institutions are ready for, and those who build expertise now will be positioned to lead the transition from reactive medicine to proactive, personalized care.
