IIM Sambalpur Introduces India’s First Four-Year Undergraduate Programs in Data Science, AI, Management, and Public Policy
IIM Sambalpur has initiated two new four-year undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Bachelor of Science in Management and Public Policy. This move marks the institute as the first in India to offer such specialized undergraduate courses, according to its Director, Mahadeo Jaiswal.
Flexible Learning Pathways with Multiple Exit Options
Mahadeo Jaiswal highlighted that these programs feature a flexible structure allowing students to earn a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a degree after three years, and an honours degree upon completing four years. This flexibility ensures multiple entry and exit points, catering to diverse student needs and career plans.
"As an institution of national importance, we are focused on providing interdisciplinary education that combines academic rigor with practical social relevance," Jaiswal stated. "Our objective is to prepare graduates who can lead with clarity, compassion, and courage in complex socioeconomic environments."
Program Details and Objectives
- Bachelor of Science in Management and Public Policy: This program addresses India's managerial needs around sustainability, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, and community-driven development. It aims to bridge the gap between policy formulation and grassroots implementation, training students to become effective change agents.
- Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: Focused on enhancing India’s digital capabilities, this course is developed in collaboration with industry leaders. It builds essential skills in data science and ethical AI practices, promoting innovation with integrity.
Both programs will be fully residential and commence from the 2025 academic session. Jaiswal emphasized, "This initiative is a step to create responsible leaders equipped with an entrepreneurial mindset in line with the National Education Policy."
Admission Process
- Admission to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence course will be through JEE-MAINS.
- Admission to the Management and Public Policy program will use CUET-UG scores.
Rajesh Kumar, Director of CUET at the National Testing Agency (NTA), noted the importance of CUET in democratizing access to quality education across India. He said, "With top institutions like IIM Sambalpur launching specialized undergraduate programs, talent from all regions can participate equally in the innovation economy."
Kumar added that Global Capability Centres are shaping future work trends, and a transparent, standardized testing environment like CUET supports the development of globally skilled professionals.
