More than a tenth of over 200 million student papers contained AI-written language in at least 20% of the submission, according to one AI writing detection platform. Three percent had 80 percent or more AI-generated text, raising urgent questions about how higher education evaluates student work.

The debate over AI in education needs to move beyond simply banning the technology. Used well, AI can deepen learning. Used carelessly, it creates the illusion of understanding. The result is a system where polished essays, presentations, or lines of code may reflect genuine understanding - or effective use of a chatbot.

Rethinking assessment and accountability

A change in the right question

Higher education now faces a structural challenge: final submissions no longer reliably reflect effort, originality, or understanding. The key question must shift from "Did the student produce this?" to "Can the student explain, defend, apply, and improve it?" This requires new methods of assessment that go beyond checking a finished product.

Research shows 62% of higher education students believe responsible AI use is essential for career success, while 80% view AI as important for their future. AI-ready graduates should be able to ask better questions, verify outputs, identify bias, protect data, cite responsibly, and know when human judgement should override AI. Using AI to generate a response is not the same as being able to verify, debug, or defend it.

Two parallel strategies for institutions

AI governance in education is often treated as a policy issue - deciding what is allowed, prohibited, or considered misconduct. But institutions must also ask what students should learn to do with AI, how faculty should redesign assignments, and how assessment can distinguish between assistance and dependency.

This requires two strategies: using AI to teach better and teaching students to use AI better. Faculty can use AI to create case studies, question banks, simulations, and personalized feedback, freeing time for mentoring. Students need skills in prompt literacy, source verification, bias detection, and data privacy.

A global survey of 1,681 faculty members across 52 higher education institutions in 28 countries found strong engagement with AI, alongside a clear need for better institutional support. An AI learning path for teachers can help address this gap by training educators to use AI effectively in classrooms.

Instead of banning AI, institutions should promote guided use - clearly defining where AI is permitted, when disclosure is required, and how students verify and improve AI-generated work. The goal is AI-ready campuses, not AI-free ones.

Assignments should show drafts, reasoning, and source choices. Projects should focus on unfamiliar problems. Viva-based evaluations should become more common. Assessment should reward judgment, originality, collaboration, and responsible AI use - not just the final output.

Why this matters for education professionals

Education is built on trust: employers trust that a degree reflects capability, and institutions trust that assessments reflect learning. AI forces a rethink of how that trust is built. For educators, the immediate task is redesigning courses so that students cannot simply outsource understanding. That means building assessments that test reasoning, application, and judgement - the skills that hold value when AI can produce copy, code, or calculations on demand.
