Indonesia Pushes for Global Collaboration in AI Development

The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is actively seeking partnerships both regionally and internationally to advance artificial intelligence (AI) development. Speaking at the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Bangkok, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria highlighted Indonesia’s ongoing national AI strategy, which has been in progress since 2020 with broad stakeholder involvement.

Patria emphasized the importance of collaboration that balances innovation with fairness, affordability, and shared benefits, especially for countries in the Global South.

Key Proposals for International AI Cooperation

Indonesia is promoting three practical initiatives to guide international AI efforts:

• Multi-stakeholder platform: Establish a platform to harmonize ethical standards and AI governance policies across countries.
• South-South Cooperation: Strengthen frameworks for knowledge sharing among Southern Hemisphere nations.
• Ethical impact assessments: Apply these assessments systematically in every cross-country AI project.

Building AI Talent and Education at Home

On the domestic front, Indonesia is developing a digital human resources ecosystem aimed at producing 9 million digital professionals, including AI specialists, by 2030. This includes updating the education curriculum to incorporate AI literacy and ethics as core components of long-term workforce development.

Commitment to Ethical and Inclusive AI Governance

During the forum’s high-level session titled “Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future,” Indonesia reaffirmed its dedication to AI governance that is inclusive, ethical, and sustainable. Patria pointed out that Indonesia’s active role in the UNESCO forum reflects the need for global AI policies that respect universal ethical principles while adapting to local contexts.

He added that the government will maintain close collaboration with partners worldwide to ensure digital transformation progresses responsibly and equitably.

Global Efforts Focused on Humanitarian Values

The UNESCO forum gathered leaders from various countries working on AI policy design and implementation. The goal is to encourage cross-regional cooperation that upholds humanitarian values, protects human rights, and promotes social justice in AI development.

Representatives from UNESCO, Malaysia, Colombia, France, the European Union, South Africa, Uruguay, and other international partners participated. The forum was moderated by Dafna Feinholz, Director of UNESCO’s Division of Research, Ethics, and Inclusion.
