Instagram adds AI assistant to Edits video editor

Instagram on Wednesday rolled out a conversational AI assistant for Edits, its video editing app designed to compete with CapCut. The tool analyzes account-specific metrics and trending topics to give creators personalized feedback, aiming to handle the heavy lifting of data analysis while leaving creative decisions to the user.

The assistant pulls from a creator's Instagram metrics, including follows, views, video retention, likes, and shares. It also ingests comments, trending content, and audience preferences to spot patterns over time. Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, said the tool surfaces insights that are difficult to detect by looking at raw numbers alone.

### Analytics over automation

Meta positioned the new feature as an analytical partner rather than a creative surrogate. Westervelt said the company worked with a group of creators to develop the tool, hearing a consistent request for AI that handles analysis without doing the creative work.

"One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them," Westervelt wrote. "Edits assistant does the digging for you. The creative calls are still yours."

This approach distinguishes Meta's strategy from competitors. While YouTube announced last week that it is building a conversational video editing tool expected to launch early next year, its focus appears to be on assisting with the actual editing process. Meta's Edits assistant, by contrast, leans heavily on performance data to inform creator strategy.

### Access and limitations

Creators can use the AI assistant within Edits, though usage is capped. Those needing more capacity can purchase a Meta One subscription to remove limits. Meta first previewed the assistant in June at an invite-only creator event, where it also confirmed work on a desktop version of Edits.

For professionals in marketing, PR, and communications, the shift toward AI-driven analytics in content creation tools signals a change in workflow efficiency. As platforms like AI Video Editing Courses become more prevalent, understanding how to interpret AI-generated insights-rather than just creating content-will become a core competency. The tool's ability to correlate metrics with trending topics offers a faster path to optimizing engagement, provided the human element remains in charge of the artistic direction.
