Jeonbuk National University in South Korea will recruit 150 master's and doctoral students across seven AI-related departments under a new "AI+X Advancement Program" designed to connect graduate research with key regional industries including robotics, defense, biotechnology, and hydrogen energy. The initiative, led by the university's Graduate School of AI Convergence, is part of a push to rank among the world's top 100 AI-specialized graduate schools.

The program targets "AI+X" professionals who can pair AI expertise with specific industry domains. Seven departments will participate, including the Department of Physical-AI Convergence Engineering, the Department for Advanced AI-Defense Industry, and the Department of Intelligent Agriculture. Educational offerings will be developed in partnership with regional companies and public institutions, including Hyundai Motor and the Rural Development Administration, to build practice-oriented training tied to actual industry needs.

Faster path to a doctorate

The curriculum also includes an accelerated track for students entering at the undergraduate level. A conventional bachelor's-to-master's-to-doctoral sequence takes more than eight years at most universities. The new fast track combines a three-year undergraduate program with a five-term integrated master's and doctoral sequence, allowing students to complete a doctorate in five and a half years.

The school's seven departments cover the fields of physical AI convergence, robot foundry, defense, biomedical convergence, and related areas, all with curricula designed for close collaboration with regional businesses and research bodies.

Building a regional AI workforce

Graduates are expected to remain in the region after earning their degrees, supplying research and innovation capacity to local companies and public research organizations. Government policy aimed at expanding AI talent has backed the initiative, and the plan signals how universities are responding to demand for specialists at the doctoral level in regional centers.

This reflects a larger push among Korean institutions to steer AI education toward applied problems rather than classroom theory alone. For educators across the system, a similar framing now shapes how career-oriented AI skills are delivered: with project-based coursework, employer input, and alignment between academic tracks and the jobs students can fill after graduation. The university also said it will build a full support system for research talent, including expanded resources for joint projects, infrastructure, and training. Officials see the approach as a way to anchor an AI research ecosystem in the province.
