Karnataka Sets 2047 Target for AI-Driven Power Grid Operations
Karnataka plans to shift its entire power grid to AI-based forecasting and operations by 2047, replacing manual processes that currently take weeks with automated systems that deliver results in minutes.
Gaurav Gupta, additional chief secretary in the state's energy department, outlined the vision at PanIIT Bangalore Summit 2026 on Saturday. The state will deploy AI across every asset, distribution point, and transformer to predict failures and optimize performance.
The shift addresses a practical problem: Karnataka's power demand grows significantly each year, and current manual oversight cannot keep pace.
Digital Twin Model for Power Management
Gupta said the energy department will likely build a digital twin-a data-based simulation model-to manage the grid. Bengaluru's traffic police already use this approach to test scenarios before implementation.
The digital twin would allow operators to run forecasts and simulations without affecting live operations, reducing downtime and improving response times to grid stress.
Startups and Academia as Partners
Gupta identified AI integration in governance as an area where Karnataka's startups and academic institutions can collaborate. The state is actively seeking technical expertise to build and deploy these systems.
Broader Economic Context
The power grid project sits within India's wider economic positioning. Chief economic adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran said at the same summit that India stands "at a fork, and not a crisis," but must act with urgency to secure its place amid global energy uncertainty.
Nageswaran emphasized that India's potential requires deliberate action from government, industry, and citizens-not passive waiting for outcomes.
For operations professionals managing infrastructure, the Karnataka initiative signals a shift toward AI for Operations in critical sectors. Those managing complex systems may find value in understanding AI Learning Path for Operations Managers to prepare for similar transitions in their own organizations.
