Kazakhstan launches AI Research University with September 1 opening
Kazakhstan will open its first dedicated AI Research University on September 1, 2026. The institution will operate from the Alem.ai Artificial Intelligence Center in Astana, according to Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek.
Students will access the country's national AI infrastructure, including alem.cloud, AlemLLM, and resources from Astana Hub. The setup gives researchers direct access to the computational and software tools needed for applied work.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reviewed the university concept before approval. He previously visited the Alem.ai center and participated in launching related educational programs.
What researchers need to know
The university represents a shift toward concentrating AI education and research within a single institution backed by national infrastructure. For professionals working in science and research, this signals Kazakhstan's commitment to building local AI capacity.
The timing matters: the September start gives prospective students roughly four months to apply. Researchers interested in AI Research Courses or broader AI for Education programs may find this development relevant to understanding the regional research ecosystem.
Details on admission requirements, degree programs, and enrollment numbers have not yet been released.
